STEVEN M HUGHES / BRAND UNIVERSE
Building the universe came before designing the brands.

THE ASK WAS SMALLER THAN THE OPPORTUNITY.
Steven M. Hughes came to me thinking about what was next for Bankroll Summit and
KnowMoney.org. But as he shared more about his personal brand, the nonprofit, the event and an idea he was developing for KnowMoney.co, I started seeing a bigger creative question.
Each had a different job to do—and different people to reach. Instead of treating the immediate needs as isolated projects, I stepped back to understand how everything could belong together. Before deciding what anything should look like, I needed to understand the relationships between them: what they shared, what needed to stay distinct, and how Steven could connect them all without flattening their individual identities.
I DIDN’T SEE FOUR BRANDS. I SAW A UNIVERSE.
The more Steven shared, the less these felt like separate branding projects. I started seeing them as different parts of the same world—with Steven as the thread connecting them.
So instead of proposing a series of disconnected rebrands, I built a Brand Universe: a framework that gave each piece its own role, audience and personality while establishing the shared DNA that could make everything feel related.

THE UNIVERSE MADE SENSE. BUT WHAT ABOUT WHAT ALREADY EXISTED?
Steven connected with the Brand Universe, but before moving forward, he wanted a clearer picture of what was already working—and what wasn’t.
So I went back through his existing brands, this time looking at them not only as individual identities, but as parts of the larger system I’d proposed. Individually, they worked. Together, the disconnect became much easier to see.
THE EXISTING BRAND LANDSCAPE HAD CREDIBILITY WITHOUT COHESION
WHAT STARTED AS A REBRAND BECAME A MUCH BIGGER IDEA.
What began as a conversation about Bankroll Summit and KnowMoney.org expanded into a larger engagement to build a connected Brand Universe around Steven and the organizations he’d created.
Sometimes the most valuable thing I can bring to a project isn’t the answer to the original ask. It’s seeing the opportunity hiding behind it.
